New releases this week

Here are the new releases for this week now in stock. The Dirtbombs new album has to have my favourite album title of the year so far – “ooey gooey chewy ka-blooey”. As usual we’ve provided some track samples for you to check out.

MGMT – MGMT
MGMT are back with their self-titled third studio album. The successor to 2008’s Oracular Spectacular and 2010 s Congratulations, MGMT finds Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser continuing to push themselves to expand the boundaries of modern pop music. Returning to Tarbox Road Studios to work with longtime collaborator Dave Fridmann (Co-producer and mixer of Oracular Spectacular and Congratulations, The Flaming Lips, Tame Impala), Andrew and Ben experimented with various in-studio writing processes, allowing the music to tell them where it wanted to go. The result is a diverse and powerful collection of 10 songs (including a cover of “Introspection” by 1960’s psych band Faine Jade) that directly mirrors the duo’s encompassing surrealist view of the everyday (see below for full track listing). The world was given a taste of MGMT in April with the Record Store Day release (on limited edition cassette single) of album opener “Alien Days,” hailed as an instant MGMT classic by fans and described by Rolling Stone as a “shimmering, psychedelic soundscape” and Spin as “a sumptuously detailed, exquisitely zonked-out space-rock construction.”

Holy Ghost – Dynamics
Holy Ghost! are excited to unveil Dynamics, the followup to the group’s critically acclaimed 2011 debut album. Recorded and mixed at DFA Studios with the help of Chris Zane (Passion Pit, The Walkmen, Friendly Fires), it is front-to-back one of the finest dance pop records of 2013. The duo’s last full-length was hailed as a “classic pop album” by The Los Angeles Times and garnered three Best New Music awards on Pitchfork – who premiered the debut Dynamics single and video, ‘Dumb Disco Ideas’, in May. Holy Ghost! have been mainstays at the spring and summer festival circuit throughout 2013, and the band are preparing to hit the road soon for a run of dates with the legendary New Order. “DFA’s latest and greatest” – Rolling Stone // “Heir apparent to LCD Soundsystem’s disco rock mantle” – Pitchfork

The Dirtbombs – ooey gooey chewy kablooey
For about a decade now, Dirtbombs frontman Mick Collins has threatened that the band’s next release would be their ‘bubblegum album’. After a couple of records of mostly originals, a compilation of singles and an album of Detroit techno covers, one might have suspected that the concept either fell by the wayside or was a farce to begin with. Well, at long last, here is Ooey Gooey Chewy Ka-Blooey. It’s understandable to assume that a bubblegum record by The Dirtbombswould be cover versions by groups like the 1910 Fruitgum Company, The Ohio Express and The Archies. After all, the band already has two albums of cover songs under their belt which salute specific genres. That is not the case in this instance. Mick Collins wrote ten new tracks which pay homage to the sound and style originally popularized in the late ’60s / early ’70s by producers / exploiters like Kasenetz-Katz and Don Kirschner. While the usual Dirtbombs’ double-drums, fuzzy guitars and soulful swagger are present, Ooey Gooey is sugary, sunshiny pop rock that recalls Josie & the Pussycats, the Banana Splits and Lancelot Link & the Evolution Revolution, to name but three. It’s all sing-along choruses, childlike themes and a contrived innocence – not the kind of record one would’ve predicted from a guy who once fronted The Gories.
