Vinyl Friday – Re-issues, restocks and a release.

We have a few LPs that just came in today, the usual details will follow below. We also have received more Arcade Fire – Reflektor on vinyl, but are completely sold out of the CD now, likely until the end of next week. Lots of new releases this week for my ears to consume. I have been listening the heck out of Polica’s latest and am really looking forward to Roy Harper’s new album. Until next time!

The Decemberists – The Hazards of Love – LP
The album began when band leader Colin Meloy, long fascinated by the British Folk revival of the 1960s, found a copy of revered vocalist Anne Briggs’s 1966 EP, titled The Hazards of Love. Since there was no actual song with the album’s title, he set out to write one, but was soon immersed in something much larger. The Hazards of Love tells the tale of a woman named Margaret who is ravaged by a shape-shifting animal; her lover, William; a forest queen; and a cold-blooded, lascivious rake, who recounts with spine-tingling ease how he came “to be living so easy and free” in ‘The Rake’s Song’. Becky Stark and Shara Worden deliver the lead vocals for the female characters, while Jim James, Robyn Hitchcock, and Rebecca Gates appear in supporting roles. 17 tracks. 180 gram vinyl.

Roy Harper – Man & Myth – LP and CD
Man And Myth, Roy’s first studio album in 13 years, isn’t just proof that one of the leading, most erudite and passionate orators of the British folk rock renaissance hasn’t lost an iota of his gifts, but also timely evidence for anyone who has wondered why so many musical luminaries have been lining up to praise this enigmatic and legendary singer-songwriter.
Four of the seven tracks that constitute Man And Myth were recorded with Jonathan Wilson at his studio in Laurel Canyon. The recently discovered keeper of the West Coast rock flame had been assembling a Harper tribute album and the two struck up a friendship after meeting backstage at Wilson’s show – Bella Union boss Simon Raymonde was also present – at London’s Borderline in 2012. ‘Heaven Is Here’ and ’The Exile’, the album’s epic closing tracks, and ‘January Man” were subsequently recorded back in County Cork.
Man And Myth is incontrovertible proof to everyone of Roy Harper’s persisting brilliance, with many hallmarks of what has singled him out since his first album 47 heady years ago.
