Fresh Spins from Shabazz Palaces, Kendrick, more Brave New Waves Sessions and More, More More!!!

Hey there! We were busy on the weekend getting out some great used records so we are just getting around to posting about the new stuff that also arrived. We’re featuring a double whammy from Shabazz Palaces, a Damn good record from Kendrick Lamarr, and a couple more of the excellent Brave New Waves Sessions. Also, Catherine Wheel‘s album “Ferment” has now been reissued and is in stock.

Shabazz Palaces – Quazarz: Born on a Gangster Star

Inspired by days on end spent in the waves—water and light, both—of Southern California, the work came to the Palaceer in a flash, like being picked up by something and carried. Always dribbling with his head up, he can see what’s going on around him and react to it, rather than starting in a certain direction and hoping to achieve something upon arrival.

Born on a Gangster Star flirts with a pop sensibility, but through the prism of Shabazz Palaces’s fire and fury. For the Palaceer, that sense is all about how the groove is moving, and the supernatural telepathy that occurs amongst his cohort. Appearing here, in body or in spirit, are Julian Casablancas, Thundercat, Darrius Willrich, Gamble and Huff, Loud Eyes Lou, Thaddillac, Ahmir, Jon Kirby, Sunny Levine, and Blood. The story belongs to Quazarz, but the air and darkness belong to us.

Shabazz Palaces – Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines

Quazarz came to the Earth from somewhere else, a musical ambassador from his place to ours. Somehow, through fire or through fury, the Palaceer of Shabazz Palaces caught wind of the tale, and it is through his prism that we hear the story.

The beach was there, and Atlaantiis, and chemical alterations and cell memories and Andre Norton, Richard K. Morgan, and always Octavia Butler. There were killings and there were votes, and brutality in both. There was sound and there were other worlds, and there was a vastness so participation sometimes came only at the edges. And the Palaceer coasted down with the alien notion, like Quazarz, and so became.

On Quazarz when they look at this place they see the inhabitants, the humans, but they don’t assess as we do. And so Quazarz was sent to meet a cat with vibration, a creative and courageous, caring, compassionate dude that stood out. The dude was a drug dealer, but that was neither here nor there, until his dealings squashed the rendezvous, leaving our alien alone to figure out what this place is really all about.

Brave New Waves – 13 Engines

Best known for their hit “More” from 1993’s Perpetual Motion Machine, 13 Engines formed in 1985 and released two independent albums before finally landing a record deal in 1991. The band toured with The Tragically Hip and went on to produce a final album, Conquistador, in 1995.

Formed by John Critchley, Mike Robbins, Jim Hughes and Grant Ethier in Toronto, 13 Engines’ brand of rock was way ahead of its time in the mid-80s, well before the alternative rock craze hit the mainstream. The band is impressive on their Brave New Waves session, captured by Kevin Komoda in their prime, complete fuzzy guitars and the magic vocals of John Critchley.

The 13 Engines Brave New Waves session was recorded on August 8th, 1989 and first broadcast in November of the same year. The recording is taken from the original CBC Archives’ tape and remastered at Grey Market Mastering in Montreal, by Harris Newman.

Brave New Waves – The Pursuit Of Happiness

Exploding onto the Canadian rock scene with “I’m An Adult Now,” The Pursuit of Happiness went on to sell over 100,000 copies of their debut album Love Junk and continued to have hits in the early 90s such as “Two Girls in One,” and “Cigarette Dangles.”

Fronted by the always-charismatic Moe Berg, TPOH delivered a breath-taking Brave New Waves session, complete wild guitar solos and impressive percussion courtesy Dave Gilby, as well as the TPOH-patented backing vocals by Kris Abbott.

The recording date of the Pursuit of Happiness’ Brave New Waves Session is unknown but is likely to be around 1990. The recording is taken from the original CBC Archives’ tape and remastered at Grey Market Mastering in Montreal, by Harris Newman.

Kendrick Lamar – DAMN.

DAMN. is a widescreen masterpiece of rap, full of expensive beats, furious rhymes, and peerless storytelling about Kendrick’s destiny in America. Storytelling has been Lamar’s greatest skill and most primary mission, to put into (lots of) words what it’s like to grow up as he did—to articulate, in human terms, the intimate specifics of daily self-defense from your surroundings. Somehow, he’s gotten better. The raps on his fourth studio album DAMN. jab mercilessly like a sewing machine. His boyish nasal instrument is distinct and inimitable as it slithers up and down in pitch on “PRIDE.” Even when Lamar sounds like Eminem, or Drake, or OutKast, he sounds like himself, and he arguably outpaces them all as a writer.
