Here’s the 411…

Calexico and Iron & Wine – Years to Burn

Calexico and Iron & Wine first made an artistic connection with In the Reins, the 2005 EP that brought Sam Beam, Joey Burns and John Convertino together. The acclaimed collaboration introduced both acts to wider audiences and broadened Beam’s artistic horizons, but it was the shared experience of touring together in the tradition of Bob Dylan’s “Rolling Thunder Revue” that cemented their bond. Their metaphorical roads diverged in the years that followed, but they kept in touch and cross-pollinated where they could. But although they often talked about rekindling their collaboration in the studio and on the stage, it wasn’t until last year that their schedules aligned.

Baroness – Gold and Grey

Baroness release their eagerly-awaited new album Gold and Grey via Abraxan Hymns. While Gold and Grey found the band once again working with Purple producer Dave Fridmann (The Flaming Lips, Mogwai), sequestering themselves at Fridmann’s remote upstate New York Tarbox Road Studio. The 17-track album ushered in two significant changes: a decidedly different recording process and guitar player Gina Gleason’s debut on a Baroness recording. The band, who tracked portions of the vocals, guitars and overdubs in Baizley’s home-basement studio, another first for them, eschewed their normal routine of entering the studio with meticulously detailed plans and instead opted for a looser, more improvisational approach that resulted in their most collaborative and emotionally evocative release to date.

Buzzcocks

As part of their continuing reissue campaign A Different Kind Of Tension and Singles Going Steady, have hit the shelves. They follow the 40th anniversary re-issues of Another Music In A Different Kitchen and Love Bites in January of this year.

As previously, both albums have been lovingly restored and re-mastered from the original ¼” tapes for the first time and come packaged with lavish booklets containing unseen images and extensive liner notes by famed cultural commentators Jon Savage (A Different Kind Of Tension) and Clinton Heylin (Singles Going Steady).

Faithful to their original track-listings, the re-issues see the albums released on vinyl for the first time in many years and they will be available on deluxe 180g vinyl and CD. Their third studio album, A Different Kind Of Tension was recorded at Eden Studio in West London in the summer of 1979 with producer Martin Rushent, who had worked on their previous two albums.

Joy Division

A limited edition 40th anniversary version of Unknown Pleasures will be released on June 14th, almost forty years to the day after it was originally released. The LP will be pressed on 180g ruby red vinyl with an alternative white sleeve resembling the original design idea.

It’s a celebration of one of the most important albums of our time as well as a landmark in music/design crossover history.

One of the most significant debuts of all time, the album’s legacy continues to endure with NME claiming it to be ‘simply one of the best records ever made’

Joy Division’s debut album Unknown Pleasures was released 40 years ago on 15th June 1979, to celebrate there is this special 40th Anniversary vinyl edition on ‘ruby’ vinyl with the sleeve flipped per the original idea for the album.
