It’s Sunday and we’re switching things up a little today for today’s Nice Pair – we’re pairing the Backbeat Recommended Read, Salmon Run by Jeff McIntyre with…any music that makes you feel chill/happy/calm/comforted/less alone in the world.
Recently we had the pleasure of meeting author Jeff McIntyre. Salmon Run is Book 1 of his graphic novel series. It’s a semi-autobiographical graphic novel that delves into profound themes such as mental illness and addiction.
The story follows the character, Jeff, on a road trip through Quebec and Nova Scotia as he attempts to escape his personal demons. Throughout the journey, Jeff encounters various people and experiences that challenge and shape his understanding of himself and his place in the world. By combining elements of a road story with a deep exploration of mental health, the book is both a visual and emotional journey. The story is as much about navigating the external world as it is about confronting his inner turmoil.
Self-described as “a proud Bi-Polar, Manic-Depressed, Recovering, Mental Health Advocate,” Jeff McIntyre champions mental health advocacy. Today is the start of Mental Illness Awareness Week (Oct 6-12). If you or someone you know is struggling with mental health matters, know that you are not alone and there is help available.
