The latest albums from GoGo Penguin, MGMT and The Wombats have all arrived plus a few heavy hitting reissues from The Ramones and Offspring have just come out. If you didn’t check out GoGo Penguin’s 2016 release “Man Made Object” you’ll want to give their latest “A Humdrum Star” a spin. They get some heavy rotation here at Backbeat. Can you believe we’re only half way through February and have already had some really great releases this year. Here’s hoping they keep coming!
There’s the usual list of restocks and additions to our new record selection a little further down the page.
On to the goods!
GoGo Penguin – A Humdrum Star
Different worlds have always collided, vividly, in the sound of GoGo Penguin. The Manchester-based trio conjure richly atmospheric music that draws from their shared love of electronica, their grounding in classical conservatoires and jazz ensembles alongside indie bands, and a merging of acoustic and electronic techniques. Over the past few years, it has earned them rapturous responses all over the world—The New York Times highlighted them as one of the 12 best bands at SXSW 2017—and proved that they’re just as at home playing to muddy festival goers as jazz fans. Their latest album, A Humdrum Star, builds on the heady momentum of its acclaimed predecessors—the 2014 Mercury Prize-nominated V2.0 and their 2016 Blue Note debut Man Made Object—and transports it to new realms.
MGMT – Little Dark Age
MGMT’s latest album Little Dark Age is the band’s first full length release since their 2013 self-titled LP and their fourth studio album. Little Dark Age was produced by the band along with Chairlift’s Patrick Wimberly and previous collaborator Dave Fridmann. Core members Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden recruited Ariel Pink and Connan Mockasin to help contribute to the record which was tracked at Tarbox Road Studios in Cassadaga, New York.
The Wombats – Beautiful People Will Ruin You
Beautiful People Will Ruin Your Life sees The Wombats continuing to assert themselves as one of the biggest and best guitar pop sensations of our time. 2015’s Glitterbug LP saw a UK Top 5 Album, along with an ARIA #2 record in Australia, and has currently received over 200 million digital streams. Their June 2017’s headline performance at Brixton Academy to celebrate the tenth anniversary of their UK platinum-selling and ARIA Gold debut album A Guide To Love, Loss & Desperation sold-out in under 24 hours, not to mention two sold-out nights at the Sydney Opera House.
