It’s Sunday which means it’s time for A Nice Pair: book and vinyl pairings that go together like Sundays and brunch. Today we’re pairing the book Fallopian Rhapsody: The Story of The Lunachicks with the Sonic Youth album Hits Are For Squares.
Fallopian Rhapsody is a memoir of the feminist punk band The Lunachicks. It captures their rebellious rise from NYC teenagers to cult icons, blending humour, raw honesty, and a deep sisterhood that helped them navigate the chaos of fame, sexism, and personal struggles. It’s all about punk, feminism, and is a great underdog story.
We’re pairing it with Sonic Youth’s album Hits Are For Squares. Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon played a key role in the early success of the Lunachicks. They attended one of the band’s early performances and sent a demo tape to Paul Smith, which led to the Lunachicks landing a record deal with Blast First Records. This helped launch their debut album, Babysitters on Acid, in 1990.
Hits Are for Squares is a compilation album that features 15 tracks handpicked by various artists and celebrities, including Radiohead, Eddie Vedder and Flea, plus one new song, Slow Revolution. We currently have the Record Store Day 2024 reissue – a limited-edition release featuring gold nugget-colored vinyl and a gold-foil jacket.
