It’s Sunday which means it’s time for A Nice Pair: books and music that go together like two peas and a pod. Today we’re pairing the memoir Pandamonium!: How Not to Run a Record Company by Simon Williams with the album Parachutes by Coldplay.
Pandamonium! is a is a candid, witty memoir chronicling Simon Williams’ journey founding Fierce Panda Records and stumbling into the discovery of future superstars like Coldplay and Keane. It captures the struggles, chaos and emotional toll of running an indie label with no rulebook, just instinct and passion. Equal parts music history and personal reckoning, it’s a behind-the-scenes look at the beautiful mess of chasing hits in the British music scene.
Parachutes, Coldplay’s debut album released in 2000, blends introspective lyrics with atmospheric melodies and gentle guitar work. It features breakout tracks like Yellow and Shiver, which helped catapult the band to international fame. The album’s moody, minimalist sound set the tone for Coldplay’s early identity and earned them critical acclaim and a Grammy Award. Prior to this album, in 1999, their debut single Brothers & Sisters was released on the Fierce Panda label.
