Featured New Vinyl + Record Store Day 2015 Late Comers

A few great titles to feature this week. It has happened before that an EP has made it to my top albums of the year before, and I think it may just happen again this year, although the full album is supposed to be out later in 2015 too. Petite Noir – The King of Anxiety EP has to be the best new music this year so far, for me. Please take the time to check out the sample tracks below. Oh yeah, Alabama Shakes and Sufjan Stevens have new albums out too, now, back to Petite Noir. Here are the featured albums for today.

New Vinyl Apr22 (1)

Alabama Shakes – Sound & Color

Sound & Color is the follow-up to the band’s Gold-certified debut album, Boys & Girls, which earned them three GRAMMY nominations, including a nod for Best New Artist.

“Soul-stirring, shape-shifting new sound.”  – NEW YORK TIMES

“This is a weirder, woozier, fiercer and sexier record than their debut in nearly every way.” – ROLLING STONE

“The Shakes’ furious energy can bridge geographical divides and remind you that rock and soul aren’t mutually exclusive” – ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY

The album’s twelve songs reveal a band honed by years on the road, and drawing from a wide range of influences. The bluesy groove of “Shoegaze” or the garage-rock freak-out on “The Greatest” give way to the psychedelic space jam “Gemini.” The gently swaying, chiming title song opens the album then explodes into the urgent, tightly-coiled funk of “Don’t Wanna Fight.” Long instrumental intros and passages create hazy atmosphere, and then the intensity of Howard’s vocals snaps everything back into riveting focus.

Petite Noir – The King Of Anxiety EP

Petite Noir is a South African producer, multi-instrumentalist, and genre-defying performer. Born Yannick Ilunga, to a Congolese father and Angolan mother, the artist known as Petite Noir has been making his unclassifiable, joyous music in various iterations for a number of years now. Collaborations with friends such as Spoek Mathambo, garnered him online attention in 2013 and 2014, leading to his signing with Double Six.

Sufjan Stevens – Carrie & Lowell

Sufjan Steven’s new beautiful solitary and rich record filled with faith and disbelief and the resurrection of trust and dreams. Sufjan’s new songs on Carrie & Lowell are absent of irony or artifice and that makes it difficult to critique. But his songs have given us the companionship and commiseration we didn’t know we needed.

Sufjan is on tour in North America in just a couple of weeks, and will also be making stops at VIVID in Sydney in May, at Eaux Claries Festival in July, and End of Road Festival in the UK in September.
