When you run a business, you have to be excited about what you’re selling so I thought it would be fun to share some of the books I’m extra excited to have on the shelves at the moment. There are so, so many, but here are some current standouts and why they made the list:
- Never Tell by Lisa Gardner – This paperback just came out less than a month ago – and our price? Just $6.95!! It just makes me so happy to sell the latest and greatest books at really affordable prices.
- One Day in December by Jose Silver – I haven’t read this one yet, but I love reading books themed to the time of year we’re currently in. The way this year is going, December will be here before we know it, making now the perfect time to read a book with “December” in the title, I think!
- The Wolf and the Watchman by Niklas Natt och Dag – Another 2019 release! This one was named Best Debut Novel of 2017 by the Swedish Academy of Crime Writers. I like reading translated novels to expand my reach and to discover new talents from other countries.
- Bad Feminist by Roxane Gay – This one’s on my to-read list. The other books I’ve read by Roxane Gay are so well written and thought-provoking. So are her Goodreads reviews – go and follow her right away if you’re not already!
- Educated by Tara Westover – This book had so much buzz surrounding it and, to me, it completely lived up to the hype. It’s a Backbeat Recommended Read.
- Women Talking by Miriam Toews – Yes, yes, we all know she’s my favourite author, but this is one of her best books to-date with such a timely message – and this copy is a signed edition, making it extra special, seeing as it’s been touched by the actual pen of Miriam Toews. Another Backbeat Recommended Read!
- Normal People by Sally Rooney – This is another favourite book of mine that just came out this year. And check it out – the paperback’s not even available in Canada yet new, but we just acquired a UK paperback edition – again, just $6.95! Another Backbeat Recommended Read.
- Feminist Fight Club: An Office Survival Manual for a Sexist Workplace by Jessica Bennett – Another extremely timely publication.
- The Clockmaker’s Daughter – The latest book from uber-popular author Kate Morton, this one just came out in paperback this year. Again, just $6.95!
- Mistakes to Run With by Yasuko Thanh – A fascinating memoir by a (Canadian!) author. Another 2019 book. Another Backbeat Recommended Read!
- A Death in the Family by Karl Ove Knausgaard – This controversial author’s work isn’t for everybody, but I’m a 100% superfan. His six-book series is a gigantic body of auto-fiction, meaning that truth and fiction are blurred. A Death in the Family is Book One of the My Struggle series, which has been translated from its original Norweigan. Next on my to-read list from him is The Seasons quartet of books, which I plan to read concurrently with each season the books are set in. In the meantime, A Death in the Family (as you might have already guessed) is a Backbeat Recommended Read.
- The Glorious Heresies by Lisa McInerney – This was the Winner of the Baileys’ Women’s Prize for Fiction 2016 but, award aside, this is the kind of book that’s almost impossible to believe is a debut novel. I devoured its fast-paced plot and read Book 2, The Blood Miracles almost right after finishing the first book. Yet another Backbeat Recommended Read!
