A Nice Pair: EDM

For this week’s A Nice Pair – book and music pairings we recommend – we’re turning our attention over to Electronic Dance Music (aka: EDM). We recommend pairing the book The Underground is Massive: How Electronic Dance Music Conquered America by Michaelangelo Matos with the album Homework by Daft Punk.

The book spans thirty years, from the inception of EDM on the underground club scene in Chicago and Detroit to today’s party atmosphere at festivals like Burning Man. But it’s not just a book about crazy raves or the best DJs, it’s about how the genre grew and morphed into something altogether different today than where it began and and worked its way into other mainstream genres like modern country, pop and hip hop.

One of the most recognizable EDM groups is Daft Punk. Although the disbanded in 2021, they left a legacy of anthems that make you want to get out of your seat and onto the dance floor. Homework was Daft Punk’s inaugural album.
