A Nice Pair: Fleetwood Mac

For this week’s A Nice Pair, we’re not looking at a musician, but we’re heading back to the 90s and the heyday of MTV. We’re pairing Fleetwood Mac’s Rumours with the book Party of One by Dave Holmes, former VJ-runner-up-turned-actual-VJ.

The full title of the book is Party of One: A Memoir in 21 songs and the book is structured via pivotal music moments in Dave Holmes’ life. A square peg, Dave identified heavily with Bee Girl in the No Rain video by Blind Melon. He never really fit in. A good chunk of this book takes place in the 90s. Dave’s mom wouldn’t allow MTV at home, but it was on at his friends’ house down the road and Dave was instantly transfixed. He found comfort in music and eventually turned it into a career.

We’re pairing the book with the classic album Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. The first chapter of the book is titled “Go Your Own Way” which really is the overarching theme here. Dave found the road to self-acceptance through his passion for music by forging his own path – and listening to lots of great music along the way.
