A Nice Pair: Flea

For this week’s A Nice Pair, we’re recommending the book Acid For the Children by Flea and Blood Sugar Sex Magik by The Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Most musician memoirs are about their shot to fame and the hedonism and partying and craziness that goes along with that lifestyle. Acid for the Children is different; it follows Flea’s life up until he joined the Chili Peppers. That’s not to say it’s not full of interesting stories. He had a fun yet turbulent childhood and his coming-of-age story helped shape the life that was to come.

We’re pairing the memoir with the album Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Although it’s the band’s fifth studio album, it’s the album that really propelled the band into worldwide popularity and critical acclaim.
